Comfort Fit Wedding Band vs Standard Fit Ring

Your wedding band is more than a piece of jewelry. It's a symbol of your love and commitment, as well as a visual reminder of your beautiful wedding day. You should be able to wear it while working in the garden, dancing the night away, or even washing a sink full of dishes.

If the fit isn't just right, however, you could soon be watching all of your memories go down the drain - literally! How can you ensure that your ring fits you well enough for daily wear? The key might be understanding the difference between a standard fit and comfort fit wedding band.

At Foundry Cut, our job is to help match our customers with the best-fitting wedding rings on the market. Expertise begins with an in-depth understanding of how your ring size affects your comfort. Keep reading to take advantage of our wisdom and choose the ring that you'll be able to wear comfortably for a lifetime!

What Is a Comfort Fit Wedding Band?

Were you paying attention during your high school math and science classes? At some point, you probably learned something about surface area. As it turns out, that's the key to understanding what makes comfort fit wedding bands different from their standard fit counterparts.

The main difference begins with the shape. To the untrained eye, standard and comfort fit rings look alike. A closer look will reveal that comfort fit rings feature a domed interior.

Essentially, the part of the ring that touches your finger does not sit flat against the skin. In mathematical terms, the diameter at the ring's center and the diameter at the ring's edges will be different. This means less of the ring's surface area will touch your skin, giving you a little bit more breathing room than a standard ring might.

Some rings are harder to resize than others for various reasons. Investing in comfort fit women's or men's rings can eliminate the need for resizing altogether. The ring's smaller outer diameter will keep it in place, while the larger interior lends you room to grow.

Hands are one of the most unique parts of the body and change in subtle ways as the body changes. A comfort fit ring's unique shape allows it to glide easily over your knuckles without causing pain. It is truly a ring designed to last "in sickness and in health."

How to Size a Comfort Fit Ring

Rings are unique pieces of artwork. While standard sizing tools can help you estimate the size you need, your jeweler always knows best. To choose the right size for your comfort fit ring, consider visiting a professional and taking advantage of their sizing tools.

As a rule of thumb, sizing a comfort fit wedding band begins with knowing your standard ring size. A comfort fit ring will typically be one half-size smaller than your standard ring size.

For example, your jeweler may measure your finger as a size 8.0. Your ring size in comfort fit will be a size 7.5.

The exception is when choosing thicker or wider rings, which are more popular in men's styles. If your ring's band is larger than 8 mm across, you will want to order your comfort fit ring in your standard size. Wider rings traditionally have a tighter fit, so size up!

What Is a Standard Fit Wedding Band?

Just because "standard fit" doesn't have the word "comfort" in the name doesn't mean these rings are uncomfortable! People have been selling and wearing rings in this style for centuries!

In contrast to comfort fit rings, the interior of a standard fit ring is flat. The diameter will be the same from edge to edge like the interior of a drinking straw. The ring's interior will touch more surface area than a comfort fit ring and is, therefore, a little bit less forgiving.

Some rings don't require special effort or expense if you need to adjust the size. In those cases, a standard fit ring is a fine choice. A jeweler can resize your standard fit ring for a fee.

In general, standard fit rings are less forgiving and can be harder to pull over your knuckles. If your hands are prone to expanding in the heat, you might prefer a comfort fit ring.

How to Size a Standard Fit Ring

Like with a comfort fit ring, your best bet is always to have your fingers professionally sized by a jeweler. A professional will use a tool that looks like a series of rings hanging from a central keychain. You will be able to try on the rings in each size and see which ring fits you best.

As standard size rings are more traditional, you can usually determine your size on the spot. We have guide to help you measure your ring size

Again, the rules change slightly when sizing wider men's styles. If your wedding band is wider than 8 mm, your standard fit ring will probably need to be one half-size larger than your standard size.

For example, if your standard ring size is 9.0, you should order a standard fit ring in size 9.5. Consulting a jeweler is a great way to ensure that your estimate is as accurate as possible.
