Your ring makes your finger green because there is copper in it. Sweat, soap and air turn that copper into copper salts, the salts are green, and under a ring they have nowhere to go except onto your skin. It's the same reaction that took the Statue of Liberty from brown to green, running on a much smaller scale on your hand.
It doesn't mean the ring is fake, and it doesn't mean you're allergic to it. Plenty of real, hallmarked jewelry does this, sterling silver included, along with 10k gold, brass, bronze, and anything gold-plated once the plating wears through. The metals that can't do it are the ones with no copper in the mix, and that list is shorter than most people expect.
Why does my ring make my finger green?
Copper reacts with the moisture and acids sitting on your skin, and the compounds it forms are green. Sweat is mostly water, but it carries salt, urea, lactic acid and fatty acids, and all of those attack copper. The products are copper chlorides and related copper salts, the same family that greens a copper roof. Jewelers and conservators call the film verdigris.
The film is soft and it doesn't stick well to metal, so it lifts off the moment your skin touches it. That's why the inside of the band is where the trouble starts. A ring traps a thin layer of sweat against your finger, holds it there at body temperature, and gives the reaction hours to run without ever drying out. The outside of the same ring gets wiped against your pocket and your steering wheel all day and stays comparatively clean.
Copper is not the only metal that leaves a mark. Cobalt does something similar, which matters if you own a cheap tungsten carbide ring, because the low end of that market uses a cobalt binder instead of nickel. Which metals turn your finger green, and which ones never do?
Brass, bronze, sterling silver and the lower karats of gold all leave the mark, because every one of them contains copper. Titanium and stainless steel do not, because they carry none, and neither do nickel-bonded tungsten carbide, the ruthenium and iridium platinum alloys or the ruthenium and gallium palladium alloys. Copper is behind almost every case, so the practical question is how much copper your ring contains. Pure metals with no copper in the recipe can't produce the stain at all, no matter how sweaty your hands get or how long you wear the ring.

Karat is a measure of how much of the metal is actually gold, and everything that isn't gold is alloy. At 10k you are wearing more alloy than gold, and copper is usually the largest part of it, which is why a cheap gold band can mark a finger faster than a silver one. On the other side of the table, the copper-free metals are copper-free for structural reasons. Titanium is used commercially in near-pure grades. Surgical stainless steel is iron, chromium and nickel. Tungsten carbide is a hard ceramic-like compound held together with a metal binder, and the binder in a decent ring is nickel. None of those recipes has room for copper.
Is the green stain on your finger dangerous?
No, the mark itself is harmless and washes off with soap and water. Copper salts sitting on the surface of your skin are a cosmetic problem, not a medical one, and the amount involved is tiny. Copper jewelry has been worn against skin for thousands of years, and contact at this scale is not treated as a health risk.
What you should separate from it is a metal allergy, because the two get confused constantly and the fix is different. Green staining is a chemical reaction between the ring and your sweat. An allergy is your immune system reacting to a metal touching you, most often nickel, and it looks different. You get itching, redness, dry or scaly patches, sometimes small blisters, and it stays put after you wash your hands. A green mark that wipes away with a paper towel isn't an allergic reaction.

Why does it happen to you and not to your friend?
Skin chemistry decides it, and the two variables that matter most are how acidic your sweat is and how much of it you produce. Two men can buy the identical sterling band on the same afternoon and only one of them ends up with a green finger by the weekend.
Sweat pH normally sits somewhere between 4.5 and 7, and the acidic end of that range strips copper faster. Diet shifts it, and so do medications, illness, and how much water you drink. Humidity and heat matter as much as the person does, which is why a ring that behaved all winter starts marking in July. Salt water is aggressive, chlorinated pool water more so, and household cleaners with ammonia or bleach will do in an afternoon what sweat takes a month to manage.
Hand creams, sunscreen and makeup add a second effect. Many of them contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are mild abrasives, and they polish fine dark particles off the metal onto your skin. That produces a gray or black smudge rather than a green one. If the mark under your ring is closer to charcoal than to moss, cosmetics are the likely cause and the metal may be fine.
Why did my ring only start doing it after a few months?
That almost always means the plating wore through and the base metal underneath is now in contact with your skin. Plated jewelry is a thin layer of one metal deposited over a cheaper core, and on fashion pieces that layer is often a quarter of a micron or less, a tiny fraction of the thickness of a human hair.
A ring is the hardest place on the body to keep plating intact. It rubs against the finger next to it, gets gripped, dragged across desks and door handles, and takes a soaking every time you wash your hands. The inside of the band goes first because that is where the friction and the moisture both live, and the inside of the band is also the part pressed against your skin, so the day the plating fails is the day the stain starts.
Heavier constructions buy you more time. Gold-filled bonds a layer of karat gold that has to be at least a twentieth of the metal in the item by weight, which works out tens of times thicker than that quarter-micron fashion layer and holds up for years of normal wear. Rhodium plating over sterling silver behaves the same way and is what keeps most white gold looking white, though it needs redoing every year or two on a ring that gets worn daily. Any of these can be re-plated by a jeweler, and each visit costs money.
How do you get the green off your skin and off the ring?
Warm water and ordinary hand soap takes the stain off your finger in under a minute, and rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad clears anything that survives that. There's no need for anything harsher, and scrubbing at it does more to your skin than it does to the copper salts.
The ring needs a separate clean, because the film builds up on the metal too and simply putting it back on restarts the process. Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush along the inside of the band gets most of it. Rinse it properly and dry it completely, since a ring put away damp keeps reacting in the box. Sterling silver responds well to a jeweler's polishing cloth after that.
Avoid abrasive polishing pastes, which strip plating and turn a cleaning job into a re-plating job. Ultrasonic cleaners are fine for solid metal but can loosen glued stones and finish off already-thin plating, so a plated piece belongs nowhere near one.
How do you stop a ring from turning your finger green for good?
Keep the copper away from the moisture, or wear a ring that has no copper in it. Everything else is a delaying tactic, and most people aren't ready to replace a ring they like.
The routine that works is unglamorous. Take the ring off before showering, swimming, the gym, and any job involving cleaning products. Dry your hands before putting it back on. Give it the soap-and-toothbrush clean every couple of weeks rather than waiting for a mark to appear. Clear nail polish painted on the inside of the band does work as a barrier, and it also wears off in a few days on a ring you wear constantly.
The permanent version is a metal with no copper in it. Nickel-bonded tungsten carbide has no copper in it, and that is what every FoundryCut band is built on. Common questions about rings that turn your finger green
Does a green finger mean my ring is fake?
No. Sterling silver, 10k gold and 14k gold are all real, hallmarked metals and all three can leave a green mark, because copper is a normal part of those alloys. A green finger tells you there is copper in the ring, and nothing at all about whether the ring is what the receipt says it is.
Will a tungsten carbide ring turn my finger green?
A nickel-bonded tungsten carbide ring contains no copper, so it will not leave a green mark. Cheaper tungsten rings built with a cobalt binder are a different case, since cobalt can react with skin and leave a mark of its own. If a ring sold to you as tungsten is greening your finger, it is far more likely to be plated steel or a copper alloy with a tungsten-colored finish.
Does sterling silver always turn your finger green?
Not always, and not for everyone. Sterling is 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent other metal, usually copper, so the copper is there in every piece. Whether it shows on you comes down to your sweat and the climate you live in, which is why the same ring marks one person and never bothers another.

Yes, as a temporary barrier. It puts a layer between the copper and your sweat and it stops the staining while it lasts. On a ring worn every day the coating usually breaks down within a week, so it needs reapplying, and any patch that wears away lets the reaction start again in that spot.
How long does the green take to wash off?
Seconds to minutes with soap and warm water. If you leave it alone entirely it fades on its own within a day or two as the skin sheds. The stain does not soak in or build up permanently, however dramatic it looks the first time you take the ring off.
